PocketBook Setup

Before you can use SyncFiction with your PocketBook e-reader, make sure you have the following requirements met:

Important Requirements

    Dropbox Account: Register at www.dropbox.com if you don't have one already

    PocketBook E-reader: Any PocketBook device with Wi-Fi connectivity
  • •
    Internet Connection: Both for initial setup and ongoing synchronization
  • •
    SyncFiction Account: Create your free account to manage fiction subscriptions

What You'll Need Access To

    PocketBook Settings: You'll need to navigate to Settings → Accounts and Synchronization → Dropbox
  • •
    Dropbox Credentials: Your Dropbox email address and password for authorization
  • •
    Wi-Fi Connection: Required during setup and for automatic synchronization

Overview

SyncFiction uses a 3-step automated pipeline to get your favorite Royal Road fictions onto your PocketBook e-reader through Dropbox:

  1. •
    Royal Road Sync - We scrape fiction metadata and all chapters
  2. •
    EPUB Generation - Convert chapters to properly formatted EPUB files
  3. •
    Dropbox Sync - Upload EPUBs to the Application → Dropbox PocketBook folder in your Dropbox account

Once setup is complete, new chapters are automatically processed and synced to your Dropbox daily, where your PocketBook can access them.

Set Up Your PocketBook

First, you need to configure your PocketBook e-reader to sync with Dropbox. The PocketBook Dropbox application allows you to download files from any device with Dropbox access directly to your e-reader.

Great News!

You don't need to install anything on your PocketBook - Dropbox sync is built-in. You just need to authorize the service.

Authorization Steps

  1. •
    Ensure Wi-Fi is enabled - Your PocketBook will prompt you to turn on Wi-Fi if it's not already connected, as internet access is required for authorization
  2. •
    Open Settings from your PocketBook's main menu
  3. •
    Navigate to "Accounts and Synchronization" from the Settings menu
  4. •
    Select "Dropbox" from the available synchronization options
  5. •
    Tap "Login" to begin the authorization process
  6. •
    Enter your Dropbox account credentials:
    • •
      Email address associated with your Dropbox account
    • •
      Your Dropbox account password
  7. •
    Complete the authorization - Follow any additional prompts to finalize the connection

What Happens After Authorization

Once authorization is successful, several things happen automatically:

Folder Creation:

  • •
    On your PocketBook: A "Dropbox PocketBook" sync folder appears in your device's Library
  • •
    In your Dropbox account: An Application → Dropbox PocketBook directory is created on the server
  • •
    Access scope: The PocketBook app only has access to files within the Application → Dropbox PocketBook folder - your other Dropbox files remain private

Automatic Synchronization:

  • •
    Files added to the Application → Dropbox PocketBook folder on your Dropbox account will automatically sync to your PocketBook when connected to the internet
  • •
    Files added to the "Dropbox PocketBook" folder on your device will sync up to your Dropbox account
  • •
    Synchronization happens automatically whenever your PocketBook has an active Wi-Fi connection

Manual Synchronization Options:

  • •
    From Settings: Go to Settings → Accounts and Synchronization → Dropbox → "Synchronize files now"
  • •
    From Library: Right-click (or long-press) on the "Dropbox PocketBook" folder in your Library and select "Synchronize files now"

Sync Folder Location

The default sync folder on your PocketBook is named "Dropbox PocketBook" but you can change this location by going to Settings → Accounts and Synchronization → Dropbox → Sync folder.

Connect Your Dropbox Account

Now that your PocketBook is ready, you'll need to connect your Dropbox account to SyncFiction so we can upload your EPUB files to the PocketBook sync folder.

    Sign in to SyncFiction with your account
  2. •
    Navigate to the Provider page from your dashboard
  3. •
    Click "Connect Dropbox" - you'll be redirected to Dropbox's authorization page
  4. •
    Sign in to Dropbox and authorize SyncFiction to access your account
  5. •
    You'll be redirected back with a success message

Privacy Note

SyncFiction requires full read/write access to your Dropbox account to sync EPUBs to the PocketBook folder. This is necessary because Dropbox's API doesn't allow limited access to other apps' folders like the PocketBook sync directory. We only use this access to upload EPUB files to your PocketBook folder and do not read or modify your other files.

Add Royal Road Fictions

Now you can start adding fictions from Royal Road that you want to sync to your PocketBook e-reader.

  1. •
    Find the Royal Road fiction you want to read
  2. •
    Copy the fiction ID from the URL (e.g., for https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/12345/story-name, the ID is 12345)
  3. •
    Go to your SyncFiction Library page
  4. •
    Enter the fiction ID in the "Add Fiction" field and click "Add"
  5. •
    Wait for processing - this can take a few minutes for long fictions

Processing Time

If you're the first user to sync this fiction, processing can take several minutes for large fictions as we scrape all chapters. For previously synced fictions, processing typically takes just a few seconds. You'll see progress updates on your Library page.

Ongoing Sync & Updates

Once everything is set up, SyncFiction automatically handles updates:

  • •
    Daily checks for new chapters on Royal Road
  • •
    Automatic EPUB regeneration when new content is found
  • •
    Updated files are uploaded to your Dropbox Application → Dropbox PocketBook folder, replacing the old version
  • •
    PocketBook auto-sync will download the updated EPUBs when connected to Wi-Fi
  • •
    You'll get notifications when new content is available

Pro Tip

Keep Wi-Fi enabled on your PocketBook to ensure automatic synchronization. You can also manually sync anytime using the context menu in your Dropbox PocketBook folder.
